CWU - The beginning of modern functional clothing. The abbreviation stands for Cold Weather Uniform. A layering system developed by the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force in the early 1960s to better protect their pilots. Especially when flying at high altitudes and remote air bases, it was always a challenge to keep personnel warm and functional. During the Second World War, mainly natural fibres were used to keep pilots warm. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, researchers developed new forms of insulation using technical fibres. This made the waistcoats thinner and warmer. The Pike Brothers new CWU waistcoats are part of this system. They are made of thick, padded polyamide, which is light, abrasion-resistant and highly insulating. These waistcoats are worn under the flight jacket and thus serve as a layering system. We have made our waistcoats from the same padded polyamide fabric that was used at the time.

Pike Brothers was founded in 1930 by brothers George and Joseph Pike. Their small yet high-quality clothing store was located in the famous Portobello Road, Notting Hill, in the heart of London. Custom clothing for men was their specialty. During the Second World War they produced uniforms for American military forces. This was the time when American soldiers came over to England. Pike Brothers managed to combine the best materials with European craftsmanship and create the unmistakable clothing you see today. They simply struck a brilliant balance between American workwear and European expertise. A legacy that defines Pick Brothers to this very day.
Pike Brothers distinguishes itself by respecting and celebrating the original functionality of its clothing instead of simply aiming for superficial succes. All clothing is made in Europe and produced the old-fashioned way. Pure craftsmanship and the best materials add up to this stylish and timeless clothing. Pike Brothers is that perfect combination of style and functionality.
